Steak at Hippopotamus, Strasbourg

It was lunch time and we did not have much time before meeting someone at Les Halles, the shopping centre in Strasbourg. It was wet and there was a chill in the air. The first restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant we went to, we couldnt get in. So we settled for the Hippopotamus having had been there before in previous years.

This is a well known restaurant chain found all over the country and basically it is for carnivores. There were four of us and three of us decided on having steaks – La Charolaise (beef that comes from the Charolles in Burgundy region.Amy decided on having a burger instead. To make up on not being able to have Vietnamese food, we had the nems starter (these are similar to the Chinese spring rolls but with a different rice pastry) and John ordered the Alsatian muscat as an aperitif – not a sweet wine but actually quite dry.

I hardly ever eat steak in England – maybe I don’t go to the right restaurants but I ve never had a good steak there. I’ve had some better steaks than what I had at the Hippopotamus and the sauces which came with them – all 3 of them  – were lacking in something. But at least it was cooked the way I like it and not overcooked. It came with a choice of vegetables: green beans, ratatouille, potatoes and chips.

The service was fine, the restaurant was spacious and not too busy. Its really well located in the city centre next the tram (Homme de Fer).
