Wong Kei on Wardour Street is not the place to go for your fine food experience. It had a reputation of having rude waiters who gives you peremptory orders to go upstairs in the old days. But I ve always found service to be effective and fast and one of the few places where I can get in easily.
I was not so sure that my friend, Yin, a food connoissier, would be so keen to go there with me but she did. It was after a day of marching and we just needed somewhere to chat while we eat. When it comes to Cantonese restaurants you can be pretty confident about certain basics – such as noodles and roast meat you see hanging up.
I ordered ‘wat tarn hor’ which is a rice noodle ( tagliatelle style) which is quickly stir fried and then whisked eggs are poured over it and served, the noodles have a velvety sheen and taste to it. I think I would have preferred it with sea food than the beef which was offered. I had also ordered a roast pork dish to share.
The roast pork was good but the skin was not as crispy as I would have liked. Yin had no complaints about her wonton noodles with barbeque pork. On reflection, I think I should have also asked for wonton noodles. That is an all time childhood favourite of mine conjuring weekend mornings of steamy noodles at roadside stalls.
Wong Kei is at 41-43 Wardour Street, London W1D 6PY, with level entrance but accessible toilet has inward opening door making it difficult to close for wheelchair users.
