Blue Orchid, Coventry: Seabass grilled wrapped in banana leaves

Pla Yang Bai Tong Grilled marinated whole seabass with fresh Thai herbs wrapped in banana leaves

A group of us went to the Blue Orchid for a meal – some wanted to try Thai but others were more familiar with Indian cuisine. This restaurant serves both, a definite plus in its favour when you have a mixed group! We had a lot of space to ourselves as well.

Those of us who have had experience with Thai food went for Tom Yam soup (Traditional spicy hot and sour soup with tiger prawns or chicken, mushrooms, lemongrass, chillies and lime juice.) and the others had satay. For my main course I had the sea bass grilled on banana leaves. It was good, beautifully presented but a touch overdone, easily done when it is served at the same time at other dishes. One of the party had an Indian curry which wasn’t hot enough (temperature wise) for her liking but the others were happy enough with their Thai curries. You have to order accompaniments like rice or naan bread are not included in the dish. I had sticky rice with mine.

The service was not that attentive but we went at a time when they did not have all their servers. They were very accomodating and we liked the very hot napkins offered at the end of the meal.

Really liked the place – for a change the thai curry I chose, because it said it was very spicy, actually was very hot! Nicely so, good flavours
