Yaki sushi noodle bar: Hainanese Chicken Rice

To be honest, I ‘ve heard for some time that a sushi restaurant is coming to Coventry. I was waiting for it to happen. Previously I had to go to Birmingham for my Japanese food fix. And then, passing at Pool Meadow by chance,  I realised that it WAS opened.

However looking at the menu, I realised that it also had my favourite Malaysian dishes like Laksa, Nasi Lemak and Hainanese Chicken Rice. Oh yes, and sushi, sashimi, udon noodles, all sorts of noodles. But I must have Hainanese Chicken Rice – that had always been my staple for lunch back home.

The presentation was superb, I loved the cucumber rose garnish. The rice was flavoursome and the essential condiments of minced ginger and chilli sauce were great. My one complaint – but then I am a conoisseur of this dish – is that the chicken is not as velvety smooth as it can be. This chicken dish is cooked by quickly boiling the water in a big pot and then swich the heat off, leaving the fowl to continue cooking in the broth.

My companion, Frieda, was very satisfied by her udon noodles in a teriyaki sauce. I shall be back for sushi and sashimi!

Both our dishes were £6.50 each.

Yaki is at Unit 4, Priory Place, Fairfax St Coventry CV1 5SR (opposite Pool Meadow). Level entry, with accessible loo.

Hi Kelly. sorry you had a bad experience. I was back and had sushi last night – did not get to the revolving bar because it was full of Chinese students. My sushi did not have tinned tuna and was very satisfying and my friend had duck – she was very happy with the dish she had. Neither of us are students and I ve eaten sushi all over the world (not in Japan, though I hasten to add) so I don’t think I am an unsuspecting diner. I ve certainly been to Birmingham and London for sahimi and sushi and I think the prices are reasonable – even when compared to Yo sushi which is a chain. Hope your next experience is a better one.
