Red Panda, Coventry

appetiser

Red Panda is tucked away in a quiet corner opposite Coventry Market. It is a  Chinese buffet ‘eat all you can’ restaurant. But if you are in the know, you realise most of the Chinese clients there order a la carte. So we, Naomi and I, did, and they gave us appetisers – spicy cabbage, peanuts and prawn crackers – while we waited for our food to be served.

fish head soup

We ordered Fish head tofu soup, French beans with minced pork and sea bass  in papilotte. The soup was very flavoursome, the beans were plump but crunchy and crisp. So far approval all round.

But the sea bass was over smothered by the spicy sauce (Lao Gan Ma), the skin was crispy. It was still very edible but the sweetness of the fish was a bit lost.

The restaurant ambiance reminded me very much of a Chinese student’s canteen. There was no natural light but the servers were friendly enough however I would not say they were over attentive.
Red Panda has level entrance and a big accessible loo.
