Friday morning I was told about Nazraj Signature Brasserie at a meeting and by 5.30 pm, I was really hungry because I had been rushing all over and not had time to eat properly. And I was in the neighbourhood but alone. Never mind I shall give myself a treat.
It was understandably quiet at that very unfashionable dining hour. I declined the wine list and ordered a passion fruit juice and a glass of cold water. The staff kindly informed me when I was pondering over the menu that the cuisine is fusion – I dithered between a Goan King Prawn Signature and Nazraj Signature, a chicken or lamb seasoned and grilled with a spicy sauce and went for a grilled sea bass with lemon grass rice instead – on account that it was Friday. (yes, I know prawn is also sea food, I never said I was rational).
I was duly informed I have to wait about 20 mins – good sign I thought, it means it is cooked to order. They suggested I had some poppadoms while waiting. My fish when it arrived had a satisfyingly crispy skin and the flesh was tender and not over cooked. I tasted turmeric but nothing was overwhelming obvious which is good because the main flavour should be the freshness of the sea bass. I did wonder if the lemons were there for taste or for garnish (thought perhaps they could have used lime instead given the Asian influence?) and really tried the rice to get the flavour of the lemon grass. There is a slight bitter undertone but not what I would associate with lemon grass? Hmm… I enjoyed every mouthful..what more can I say?
I did not allow myself even to think about pudding. I think my bill came to about £18.
I was at Nazraj 5 Station Square, Coventry, CV1 2GT, UK. Accessible level entrance but loo not fully accessible yet.
